The controversy surrounding the handling of Jeffrey Epstein’s files continues to impact Republican political contests. Representative Nancy Mace, known for advocating the release of these files, faces challenges in the South Carolina gubernatorial primary. She trails behind Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, who received President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
Mace believes her stance on transparency in the Epstein case influenced Trump’s backing of her rival. Despite this, she remains committed to her advocacy against sex trafficking and pedophiles in her state. ‘That’s the sole reason I didn’t get the endorsement, because I voted to release the Epstein files, and I’m okay with that,’ Mace told Politico. She emphasizes her dedication regardless of electoral outcomes.
Trump’s endorsement altered the race dynamics, positioning Evette as a leading candidate. In expressing his support, Trump highlighted Evette as a ‘good friend and fighter’ with his ‘Complete and Total Endorsement.’ Mace, however, downplays the impact of Trump’s support on polling figures.
A Broader GOP Division
The Jeffrey Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed by Trump, instructed the Justice Department to disclose unclassified records. The act led to disagreements among Republicans, with lawmakers who pushed for transparency criticizing the speed and completeness of disclosures. This disagreement highlighted internal party tensions.
Some Republicans blamed their electoral losses or challenges on their efforts to release the files, with internal disputes revealing divisions within the party.
Notable Figures
Among those significantly involved was Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky. He led efforts with Democrat Ro Khanna to push for file disclosures, even using a discharge petition to bypass GOP leadership. Massie later lost his reelection bid following Trump’s criticism and endorsement of his primary opponent. He attributed his loss partly to his bipartisan cooperation on this issue.
Similarly, Representative Nancy Mace signed Massie’s petition and has had conflicts with administration officials over the Epstein files. Despite her support for Trump, she attributes her lack of endorsement to her advocacy for transparency.
Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, another signatory, became more critical of Trump’s administration, particularly on foreign policy and Epstein files. Her resignation followed a public dispute with Trump, who promised to support a challenger against her.
Lastly, Lauren Boebert, also involved in the petition, faced Trump’s disapproval. Despite his past endorsement, Trump expressed willingness to support a prominent challenger against her due to her stance on the Epstein files. Boebert, however, continues to support Trump while advocating for transparency.
The division over Epstein files among Republican lawmakers highlights ongoing tensions within the party, potentially influencing primary races as campaigns proceed.
