1 week ago 0

The Tony Awards ceremony, held in New York, witnessed a remarkable presence of ‘Saturday Night Live’ (SNL) alumni. Lorne Michaels, the creator of SNL, stood out as he received the Tony Award for the best new musical. This strong presence from the long-standing sketch comedy show underlined its impact in the entertainment industry.

Darrell Hammond, an SNL star from 1995 to 2009, set the tone for the evening by announcing the ceremony. He continues to contribute to the legacy of SNL as its current announcer. Maya Rudolph, known for her role in SNL from 2000 to 2007, presented the first award of the night. Currently, Rudolph stars as Mary Todd Lincoln in the comedy ‘Oh, Mary!’

Before awarding the prize for leading actor in a play to John Lithgow for ‘Giant,’ Rudolph shared a light moment with Cole Escola, the creator of ‘Oh, Mary!’ She reflected on the power and courage it takes for nominees to perform their craft and the monetary rewards that come with it.

The night also saw competition between two actresses with rich SNL backgrounds. Rachel Dratch, with seven seasons on SNL from 1999 to 2006, and Ana Gasteyer vied for the featured performance by an actress in a musical category. Dratch played the Narrator in ‘The Rocky Horror Show.’ Gasteyer was part of ‘Schmigadoon!’ However, the award went to Shoshana Bean for ‘The Lost Boys.’

Dratch, notable for her role as the U.S. president’s secretary in the feminist comedy ‘POTUS,’ brought her unique flair to ‘The Rocky Horror Show.’ The picture of Dratch, Rudolph, and Gasteyer at the Tony Awards highlighted the enduring influence of SNL on Broadway’s esteemed stage.
