Fencing has been installed around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. Officials describe this as a preventive security measure ahead of the July 4 holiday.
The decision follows President Donald Trump’s comments on vandalism issues affecting the Reflecting Pool. Algae have returned, and there is visible blue lining peeling off, despite a recent $14-million refurbishment. Trump’s administration reports six arrests related to the site incidents, with 17 police reports filed.
The Department of the Interior has stated that this step is part of a larger initiative to protect the landmark. Concerns about the site’s maintenance have grown.
“With the increase in vandalism by leftist activists, the fencing is going up earlier than originally planned to ensure no more damage is done to this historic site,” stated the Department in an interview with The Hill.
While specific incidents prompting the new measures have not been detailed, officials confirm that protective efforts are ramping up as visitor numbers increase.
This situation is evolving and updates are expected.
