Serena Williams Eyes Tennis Comeback with Coco Gauff Partnership

1 hour ago 0

Days before Serena Williams confirmed her return to tennis, Coco Gauff expressed enthusiasm about the possibility at Roland-Garros. “That would be really cool,” said Gauff, 22. She regretted not having played against Williams, noting the widespread rumors about her return. Gauff looked forward to the impact of Williams’ comeback on the sport.

Williams, 44, expressed a different interest. Rather than compete against Gauff in singles, she wishes to partner with her in doubles. “I would really love to play with Coco,” Williams commented after competing at the Berlin Tennis Open alongside Karolina Muchova. She admired Muchova’s skills and stated her wish to have partnered with Gauff.

Williams shared her joy in watching both Muchova and Gauff play, expressing regret for not having asked Gauff earlier about playing doubles due to the latter’s focus on singles matches.

Williams marked her return to professional tennis by teaming with Victoria Mboko, 19, to win a doubles match at the HSBC Championships in London. However, their streak ended when Mboko had to withdraw due to a knee injury. Williams then shifted her focus to Berlin and it was revealed that she and her sister Venus Williams would partner in doubles at Wimbledon.

Serena Williams holds 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the highest for any woman in the Open Era. Additionally, Serena and Venus have together claimed 14 doubles championships, six of which were achieved at Wimbledon.
