Severe Flooding in West Virginia Causes Widespread Damage

Torrential rains in West Virginia led to flash floods that submerged homes and businesses, destroyed bridges, and necessitated numerous water rescues. Governor Patrick Morrisey declared a state of emergency across all 55 counties on Tuesday night, as rescue efforts continued on Wednesday.

Emergency Response and Search Operations

Governor Morrisey dispatched 500 National Guard members to the hardest-hit northern regions. More than 100 people have been rescued from floodwaters. Concerns remain about missing persons, and 19 helicopters from the National Guard and state police have been deployed or readied for rescue missions.

Three shelters have been established, currently accommodating over 100 residents. Forecasters reported rainfall upwards of 7 inches, with some areas receiving as much as 4.5 inches in just 37 minutes. “There’s no place for the water to go,” Governor Morrisey remarked.

“This is a time for West Virginians to come together to pray and support the affected. Help will be vital in rebuilding these communities,” Morrisey emphasized during a news conference.

Community Impact and Relief Efforts

Lars Dalseide, Morrisey’s communications director, stated that official flooding information will be issued after proper verification. Efforts continue to gather additional details on the situation.

Videos and photos online show submerged cars in parking lots, including a Walmart in Weston. Nearby, a hotel experienced flooding on its main floor. Emergency crews reported multiple rescues; however, some locations remain inaccessible due to floodwaters.

Buckhannon Mayor Robbie Skinner noted that places like West Virginia Wesleyan College would serve as donation drop-off points. He expressed hope and resilience, stating, “We will get through this.”

Severe Weather Span Across Several States

The storms responsible for the West Virginia flooding also produced tornadoes and severe weather over a broad area, affecting places from Cincinnati to the New York City suburbs. Central Ohio saw a church’s roof torn off, and New York suffered downed trees due to strong winds. Fourteen tornadoes were reported across six states on Tuesday.

Preceding storms on Saturday had already saturated the ground, complicating the flooding by adding over 2 inches of rain. Flood warnings remain in effect for several counties, while flood watches span from eastern Tennessee to North Carolina.

Historical Context and Previous Flooding

The stormwater crisis coincided with the tenth anniversary of a similar event where 23 lives were lost due to heavy rains. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a creek near Buckhannon, Sand Run, reached a historic high, surpassing records set during the catastrophic 1985 flood that claimed 47 lives.
