Norway’s Resurgence in the World Cup Spotlight

1 hour ago 0

In New York City, Norwegians were noticeable as they engaged in a fan tradition known as the ‘Viking row.’ Clad in red, they performed this ritual in various locations including the subway and Times Square. The same night, at the New York-New Jersey Stadium, they repeated the tradition to celebrate Norway’s 3-2 victory over Senegal in the World Cup.

Norway’s national team participated in this celebration, led by Erling Haaland, their star striker, who contributed two goals in the match. Previously, Haaland had scored two goals against Iraq, matching the performance of top scorers like Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in the tournament thus far.

Making its first appearance in the World Cup since 1998, Norway is advancing to the knockout stage after winning its first two games. Ståle Solbakken, Norway’s manager, expressed his optimism about Haaland’s performance, highlighting the striker’s potential for the Golden Boot award, reserved for the tournament’s top scorer.

During the match, Haaland displayed his skill by creating multiple goal-scoring opportunities. In one moment, he pressured the Senegalese goalkeeper and nearly scored, showing his relentless pursuit of the ball. Despite missing some chances, Haaland redeemed himself by scoring in the second half, with goals in the 48th and 58th minutes.

Haaland, known for making significant impacts in major tournaments, is establishing himself as a prominent goal scorer. Previously, in his first Champions League game, he scored a hat trick and, in the Premier League, he scored twice in his debut for Manchester City.

Looking ahead, Norway will face France, with both teams being undefeated. Haaland, in his interview, downplayed expectations, suggesting France could win. Yet, his focus remains on the broader achievement of Norway’s performance, recognizing the historic nature of their World Cup journey.
