The Tale of Rex: An Unexpected Adventure in Scottsdale

Rex, a giant sulcata tortoise, recently found himself on an unexpected adventure in Scottsdale, Arizona. Rex’s story began when he was spotted by Sara Westfall’s 5-year-old daughter, who was eating dinner and exclaimed, ‘Daddy, a tortoise!’ The tortoise was initially mistaken for a lawn decoration until the family realized it was a living, breathing creature.

Neighborhood Search

The neighborhood quickly became involved in finding Rex’s owner. Residents posted on social media and went door-to-door. Meanwhile, Rex was kept comfortable in the Westfall family’s backyard, where he enjoyed carrots and hay.

Sulcata Tortoise Challenges

Sulcata tortoises are popular pets due to their unique appearance and personality. However, they require significant care and space. Dan Marchand from the Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary notes that many owners are unaware of the commitment needed. The sanctuary has taken in around 700 sulcatas, highlighting the challenges these tortoises can pose.

Finding Rex’s Roots

Frank Boxberger had bought Rex from a San Diego pet store about 15 years ago. Rex became a beloved family pet, even playing a role in events like a wedding. However, due to Rex’s digging habits, Boxberger moved him to his mother’s house, leading to his accidental escape.

A New Home

Although Westfall adored Rex, she couldn’t adopt him permanently. Garret Beshey, a plumber, stepped in to offer Rex a new home. Beshey was well-aware of the issues surrounding sulcata tortoise breeding, opting for adoption over purchase. Beshey plans to rename Rex, considering ‘Bowser’ after the Mario character.

As Rex was loaded into Beshey’s truck, Westfall’s daughter waved goodbye to ‘Chicken Nugget,’ sending Rex off to his next chapter.
