During the vigil, Johnathan McFarland expressed deep sorrow, noting his longing for his mother, sister, brothers, and his father, who, according to police, committed the crime and later took his own life when approached by officers. He stated, “No matter what is being told to me, I will always love and miss my dad.”

Audrey Perdue, Dakota Whitlow’s fiancée, spoke of Whitlow’s skills as a metal worker and his unfulfilled potential. Addressing the crowd, she shared, “My heart is broken as I grieve for the loss of my fiancé and the life that we had planned together. My heart breaks for everyone left behind to grieve these immeasurable losses.”

The authorities discovered four of the victims at a home in Muscatine, a city approximately 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids, with a population of about 24,000. McFarland was found later on a city trail, where he fatally injured himself while officers were conversing with him, according to Chief Kies. Two additional male relatives of McFarland were also found fatally shot in different city locations, one in a home and another in a business establishment.

Police have confirmed McFarland had a criminal history, though specific details are yet to be disclosed.

Criminologist James Alan Fox of Northeastern University, who manages a mass killings database alongside the Associated Press and USA Today, reported this incident marks the sixth family mass killing in the U.S. this year. Another incident near Buffalo, NY, was added to the list shortly after.

Mass killings refer to events where at least four individuals are killed within a 24-hour period, excluding the perpetrator. The recorded number of mass killings this year totals 13.
