5 days ago 0

A man described as “armed and extremely dangerous,” linked to the fatal shooting of a Virginia deputy, was apprehended in North Carolina on Sunday. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office reported that Michael Puckett was detained in Surry County after an intensive search.

Puckett was first detected through wildlife camera footage at 6:56 a.m. on Greenhill Road, north of Mount Airy. The image showed him wearing a baseball cap and some type of face covering. Authorities believe Puckett ambushed two deputies during a welfare check on Friday night, resulting in the death of one officer and injuries to another. The fallen officer, deputy Logan Utt, was a 31-year-old military veteran.

Before Puckett’s capture, the FBI had announced a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to his arrest. Additionally, the U.S. Marshals Service promised a $10,000 reward, totaling $60,000. It’s unclear if this reward led to Puckett’s capture.

Puckett faces charges for aggravated murder in Virginia. The manhunt involved cooperation between the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI’s Richmond Field Office, U.S. Marshals Service, Virginia State Police, and multiple local and state agencies.

The incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. when deputies, responding to a welfare check requested by a family member, encountered Puckett. He reportedly opened fire, killing Utt and injuring another officer, who was saved by his ballistic vest. The deputies returned fire, but Puckett managed to flee.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy Logan Utt joined the force in 2023, already an accomplished military veteran. According to Sheriff Kevin Kemp, Utt’s ambition was to serve as a deputy sheriff and contribute to the safety of Carroll County.

“Today, Carroll County has lost a hero, and a family has suffered an unimaginable loss,” Kemp noted.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger shared a statement online, acknowledging Deputy Utt’s bravery and expressing wishes for his family and the injured officer’s recovery. “Deputy Logan Utt’s sacrifice is a testament to his bravery and dedication to his community,” she wrote.
