Vita Vea Requests Trade from Buccaneers Amid Contract Dispute

Vita Vea, the nose tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has requested a trade just before the opening of training camp. This move marks a drastic step in his frustration with contract discussions during the offseason. Vea, a standout player with two Pro Bowl selections, reportedly feels disconnected from the team’s future and has voiced his desire to leave, according to a source confirmed by Fox News Digital.

Currently under contract until the 2026 season, Vea’s agreement promises him up to $18 million if he completes all 17 games in the last year. Though requesting a trade, Vea’s exit is not guaranteed as the Bucs are cautious about offloading talents merely to quell trade talk distractions.

Vea’s financial grievances stem from his ranking as the 19th-highest-paid interior defensive lineman in the league. He contends this does not reflect his performance level, arguing he is significantly more valuable. As a structural core of Tampa Bay’s defense, Vea excels as the team’s premier run defender. Football analysts frequently state that stopping the run is pivotal for any defense.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 347 pounds, Vea efficiently controls the middle with his size and power. He has consistently handled double-teams throughout recent seasons. During the NFL Wild Card game against the Dallas Cowboys on January 16, 2023, Vea sacked quarterback Dak Prescott, demonstrating his potent impact.

Since becoming a regular starter in 2019, Vea has propelled Tampa Bay’s defense to one of the most effective against the run. Between 2019 and much of 2024, the team led the league in limiting rushing yards per game to 94.1, and yards per carry to 4.0. They placed within the top five in run defense in five of six seasons, including topping the league in 2019 and 2020.
