An airport worker and military veteran in California has received over $135,000 in donations after a viral video showed him struggling across a tarmac. This heartfelt response came as people sought to help with his medical and daily living expenses.
The video recorded at John Wayne Airport in Orange County has amassed nearly 6 million views on TikTok. The footage captured the attention of Lacinda Thackeray, who noticed the worker was in significant pain while performing his duties. “Watching him work so hard — he could barely move — truly broke my heart,” Thackeray shared. “I know there has to be a way we can help him retire.”
The worker was later identified as James Blair, a U.S. Navy veteran. Blair spent a decade working as an aircraft mechanic before starting a career refueling planes. Years of physically demanding work have taken a toll on his health, especially his knees, Blair explained to CBS News. Despite his chronic pain, he has continued working, while also caring for his 90-year-old mother in hospice care.
After the video went viral, many viewers were motivated to donate to help Blair with his medical expenses and other needs. The fundraiser has surpassed $135,000, with a goal of reaching $200,000. “When I first saw the video and the money started going up, I started laughing,” Blair mentioned. “I’ve been doing this job for 20 years, and I just didn’t think anybody actually cared.”
Comments on the video are filled with messages of support from both those who know Blair and strangers moved by his story. Many described him as a hardworking individual who has spent years prioritizing others. One user remarked, “That’s my coworker James. I have been working alongside him for five years now, and talking to him is the best part of my shift.”
Blair’s military service and his two decades of work at the airport have also been recognized, with many expressing that he deserves the support he is receiving. “Our vets deserve so much better,” another user noted.
The fundraiser’s success has been celebrated, reflecting a communal effort to honor veterans. One comment succinctly captured the sentiment: “This is how we honor our veterans.”
