Dr. Vincent Munster, a Dutch virologist recognized for his contributions to Covid vaccine development, is facing scrutiny from U.S. federal investigators. He has been charged with attempting to smuggle vials containing deactivated mpox and other biological substances into the United States, as per a criminal complaint recently revealed.
Dr. Munster, age 53, directs the virus ecology section at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, a facility managed by the National Institutes of Health in Montana. His colleague, research assistant Claude Kwe, 38, from Cameroon, accompanied him during the trip. They were stopped by customs officials at Detroit airport after returning from the Republic of Congo, where they had been working amid an mpox outbreak, according to prosecutors in Michigan.
“The materials intercepted were intended for research purposes,” said Dr. Munster’s lawyer.
In a related controversy, right-wing influencer Laura Loomer accused the institute of concealing the incident, making the case against Dr. Munster a spotlight in conservative circles. White Coat Waste Project, an animal rights group, initially made the investigation public following a whistle-blower’s disclosure. They have portrayed Dr. Munster as potentially jeopardizing national security.
