Vice President JD Vance recently discussed the diplomatic relationship between the United States and Israel. Tensions have reportedly increased between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Vance stated on ‘Jesse Watters Primetime’ that while the US and Israel share many interests, there are areas where their goals differ.
Vance emphasized that the main US objective regarding Iran is preventing the development of nuclear weapons. Recent US intelligence reports have raised concerns about Israeli surveillance targeting American negotiators involved in US-Iran peace talks. Those allegedly surveilled include the Pentagon’s policy officer, Elbridge A. Colby, and Trump’s negotiator, Steve Witkoff.
President Trump recently confirmed a heated interaction with Netanyahu over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, highlighting a rare disagreement between the two leaders. The Pentagon has now listed Israel as a top counterintelligence threat.
Vance acknowledged Israel’s security concerns but maintained that US policy toward Iran prioritizes American interests. He stated, ‘Over the last year and a half, we’ve created the necessary space where the president believes we can achieve a long-term settlement to Iran’s nuclear deal.’ Vance noted that while Israel may have differing views, the agreement aligns with US priorities.
Recent military exchanges between Israel and Iran ceased after a tumultuous period marked by the IDF challenging Trump’s Middle East ceasefire efforts. US-brokered negotiations have seen Iran presenting offers, suggesting progress in talks.
Vance conveyed optimism for reaching a Middle East peace deal, emphasizing the need for ongoing monitoring and inspections to ensure Iran adheres to the nuclear agreement. ‘Accomplish the president’s mission, but verify over the long term that the Iranians are keeping their end of the bargain,’ he said, highlighting the lessons learned from past agreements.
He concluded by underscoring the potential impact of a US-Iran peace agreement as a significant achievement for the American people.
