Nick Reiner, son of Rob and Michele Reiner, is requesting access to his $1.5 million trust fund. He aims to use the funds for his defense against double homicide charges. Lawyers representing Nick, aged 32, submitted a detailed petition in a Los Angeles court, stating that he should have begun receiving these funds two years ago. The petition highlights ‘unambiguous instructions’ from his parents on disbursing the trust, which they established in 1993.
Nick Reiner’s attorneys emphasize that his innocence is presumed, and he should use his funds for defense. The trust is part of the Reiners’ estate plan but is separate from the broader family trust. Each Reiner sibling, including Nick’s siblings Jake, 34, and Romy, 28, holds an independent trust for individual benefit. Neither Nick’s attorneys nor his siblings immediately responded to media requests for comments.
Nick has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges related to his parents’ deaths in December. Authorities reported Rob and Michele Reiner, ages 78 and 70, were found deceased in their Brentwood home. Nick was detained hours later.
The petition claims that Nick should have received half the trust at age 30 and the rest at age 35. His attorneys describe these distributions as ‘mandatory and unconditional.’ The petition asserts the trust still contains over $1.5 million allocated for Nick’s benefit, which he will fully receive when he turns 34. Yet, the trustee hasn’t released any funds due when Nick turned 30.
Nick Reiner seeks the money to support his legal defense and his commissary account during incarceration. The petition argues that withholding these funds constitutes an abuse of the trustee’s discretion. It stresses the importance of these funds given the gravity of the charges Nick faces.
Without the funds, Nick cannot afford necessary expenses or legal representation. Initially represented by Alan Jackson, Nick had to switch to a public defender because he couldn’t maintain Jackson’s services. The petition notes Jackson’s willingness to resume representation if funds are available.
The legal proceedings against Nick have progressed slowly, complicated by his schizophrenia medication adjustments made before his parents’ deaths.
