Holmes Shines in Libertyville’s Championship Win

2 hours ago 0

Libertyville senior outfielder Carson Holmes was not the immediate choice for heroics in Saturday’s Class 4A state championship game. Previous success had seen him bat .500 during the Wildcats’ successful run to the title in the past year. However, he had struggled recently, going hitless in his last ten at-bats with six strikeouts.

During the top of the eighth inning at Wintrust Field, Holmes broke his slump in a significant way. After experimenting with different bats, he relied on the one he used predominantly the previous year. ‘It acted as a mental reset,’ Holmes explained. ‘I returned to what felt reliable.’

The decision proved fruitful. Holmes hit a game-winning single to left field, driving in junior pitcher Madden Cotts to secure a 7-6 victory over Maine South. ‘It was a full-count fastball high and in,’ Holmes described. Initially worried the ball might be caught, Holmes was relieved when it dropped, sparking an ‘electric feeling.’

Senior shortstop Trevor Wallace had faith in Holmes as he overheard teammates expressing confidence when Holmes chose his familiar bat. ‘Despite struggles, he batted third all year, and we trusted him,’ Wallace noted.

This trust underscored the Wildcats’ impressive 31-10-1 season run. ‘The team backed me even when I struggled,’ Holmes said. ‘Starting the playoffs off a loss set a challenging stage, but we supported each other and persevered.’

Libertyville coach Matt Thompson resettled Holmes into the game after making a defensive change in the seventh inning. ‘We reassured him of his importance to the team,’ Thompson stated. Holmes maintained his focus, practicing diligently and maintaining form in batting practice.

Holmes’ final at-bat was set up by senior outfielder Jack Cenar scoring the go-ahead run on a balk, allowing Holmes a moment to regroup. Holmes’ crucial single to left field mirrored his previous year’s RBI single on the same field, ensuring the Wildcats’ victory despite Maine South’s effort to score in the bottom of the eighth.

Holmes received the game ball, adding to his collection of state medals and championship rings, commemorating his achievements. ‘I’ve watched that last at-bat over and over,’ Holmes admitted. ‘It’s surreal to see everything align for victory.’
