Erling Haaland continues to excel at the 2026 World Cup, boosting Norway’s campaign with his remarkable goal-scoring ability. In a key Group I contest, Norway faced Senegal, demonstrating the talent present in the Norwegian squad.
Marcus Holmgren Pedersen played a crucial role, entering as a substitute in the first half. He broke the deadlock at the 43rd minute, scoring with a stunning kick that eluded Senegal’s goalkeeper, putting Norway up 1-0.
Haaland was quick to make an impact in the second half. Just three minutes in, he added another goal for Norway, followed by another at the 58-minute mark. Two goals in this match marked his back-to-back games with multiple goals.
Senegal pushed hard to level the match late in the game but failed to find the equalizer. Norway sealed a 3-2 victory, securing their place in the Knockout Phase of the tournament. The team celebrated their achievement, though they faced a formidable next opponent, Kylian Mbappe and France.
In a post-match interview with Fox Sports, Haaland reflected on their progress, expressing his excitement about advancing. However, he openly acknowledged the challenge of playing against France. Haaland remarked, “We managed to get through, which is incredible, so I couldn’t care too much about that game now… they’re probably going to win against us, they’re probably going to win the whole tournament.”
His comments hinted at a strong favoring of France’s prowess but appeared somewhat dismissive of Norway’s potential victory against them. Given Haaland’s impressive debut in his first World Cup, his lack of confidence may surprise many. He has been outstanding for Manchester City in the Premier League since 2022 and stands out as one of the emerging stars at this World Cup, alongside Spain’s Lamine Yamal.
The approaching confrontation with France was initially one to look forward to. Haaland’s recent remarks have cast some doubt on the focus for Norway, questioning whether the team aims to win Group I or opts to conserve energy for the Round of 32.
