Algeria’s national football team is on the brink of reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup. They achieved a significant 2-1 victory against Jordan on Monday night, a result that enhances their prospects for advancing.

The match, held at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, California, saw Amine Gouiri and Nadhir Benbouali scoring off corner kicks in the second half. This comeback win represents Algeria’s first World Cup victory since 2014.

After trailing early due to Nizar Al Rashdan’s goal for Jordan, Algeria intensified its efforts. The team’s pressure paid off when Benbouali, a second-half substitute, headed in a corner kick from Riyad Mahrez in the 69th minute. Gouiri then sealed the win in the 82nd minute with a decisive touch that deflected off the goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila.

This victory marks a historic moment for Algeria, as they secured a World Cup win after conceding the first goal for the first time. Previously, they never overcame a deficit at the World Cup, recording seven losses and two draws in such scenarios.

Algeria began the tournament with a 3-0 defeat to Argentina. Now, they have a chance to clinch second place in Group J with a win against Austria on Saturday. This would secure their progression to the knockout rounds.

Jordan, however, faced elimination from the tournament with this second consecutive loss. Despite an initial defeat by Austria 3-1, they showed determination in their World Cup debut.

Algeria’s game-changer happened when Benbouali equalized, setting the stage for Gouiri’s winning goal. The Algerian team celebrated with their fans at Levi’s Stadium after Gouiri’s shot secured their comeback win.
