Blue Island Mayor Opposes Data Center Developments

1 hour ago 0

Blue Island Mayor Fred Bilotto expressed his opposition to data center developments at the former MetroSouth Hospital and Libby, McNeill and Libby building. Previously undecided, Bilotto now believes data centers won’t provide the jobs, economic impact, and long-term community benefits needed for the area.

He stressed the importance of treating property owners fairly, while still having a vision for Blue Island’s future. Builders Capital, owning these properties, suggested demolishing the hospital buildings and swapping the hospital site for the Libby property for a data center. However, residents rejected this idea at a public meeting, leading to alternative plans for the Libby building.

The former hospital at 12935 Gregory St. previously employed many locals and is seen by residents as key to community service. It was acquired by Builders Capital after Lockwood Development Partners foreclosed and failed on a senior living proposal due to financial issues.

Bilotto sees potential in the Libby property for industrial or logistics development, offering significant employment opportunities. Acquired in 2025 after legal challenges, this historic site by Landmarks Illinois is positioned as a premier development opportunity.

City Administrator Thomas Wogan noted developer interest in the Libby site, with plans to explore revitalization options. Residents, including Marie Mindeman, advocate for small businesses and medical facilities over data centers, emphasizing community growth despite economic challenges.

Uncertainty shrouds the future of both properties, yet city officials prioritize decisions benefiting residents long-term.
