Bystander Injured in White House Shooting Incident

1 week ago 0

A bystander remains in serious but stable condition after being struck by gunfire near the White House. The incident occurred when a man fired on a security checkpoint and was subsequently shot by U.S. Secret Service officers.

The Secret Service, in a statement, mentioned that the bystander, whose identity is undisclosed, received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Details on how the bystander was shot are unclear.

The suspect, 21-year-old Nasire Best from Dundalk, Maryland, began shooting at a security checkpoint outside the White House. Secret Service officers returned fire, resulting in Best being fatally shot. He was declared dead at a hospital. No officers were harmed during the incident, according to Secret Service Director Sean Curran. Curran also expressed hopes for the bystander’s full recovery.

President Donald Trump was present in the White House when the shooting happened. This event marked the third shooting involving the president in recent weeks. Previous incidents include an armed attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner and an earlier shooting near the Washington Monument.

On Truth Social, Trump commented on the suspect’s alleged fixation with the White House. He highlighted the incident to advocate for his proposed ballroom project on the White House’s former East Wing site. Trump is seeking $1 billion from Congress for White House campus security enhancements.

Nasire Best had a prior encounter with law enforcement near the White House. District of Columbia court records reveal an arrest last July when Best attempted to access the grounds at a different checkpoint. He ignored officer commands, claiming to be Jesus Christ, and sought arrest. A 2023 graduate of Dundalk High School, Best was also a track and field athlete.

Best’s mother, speaking to The Washington Post, expressed disbelief over the incident. She said her son was not violent, despite comments circulating on social media.
