Fans Celebrate at Los Angeles FIFA Fan Festival

2 hours ago 0

Tickets for the U.S. vs Paraguay match on Friday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood were costly. However, a few miles north, fans like Jose Santiago and Ivan Gonzalez enjoyed the game affordably. Each paid $10 to watch on big screens at the packed Coliseum, part of the Los Angeles FIFA Fan Festival on its second day.

“We bought these tickets last minute, not knowing what to expect,” said Santiago, from Fullerton. “And so far, we’ve been blown away. We definitely want to come back.” “It’s dope,” added Gonzalez, from Yorba Linda. “You feel the game. You feel the atmosphere. It’s fun. Everyone’s into it right now.”

Fans enjoyed a range of food and drink options, pop-up tents from brands like Galaxy and LAFC, and a unique on-field experience at the USC football home. Santiago mentioned, “It makes you still feel like you’re a part of it. It still makes you feel like you’re at the stadium because we’re all watching the game.”

The U.S. performed well in their World Cup opener. For those who could afford the high ticket and parking prices at SoFi Stadium, it was worthwhile. Meanwhile, Santiago and Gonzalez represented many who appreciated their affordable evening at the Coliseum, celebrating their nation’s success.

Several attendees echoed these sentiments. Charlotte Cabeca, who supports Colombia and any South American team, enjoyed watching the match with other fans at a reasonable cost. “It’s so fun,” she said, noting the family-friendly atmosphere. Cabeca plans to attend more fan events in L.A. during the tournament, as attending actual World Cup matches is financially unrealistic for many.

Cabeca also appreciated the sense of community. “I love that the city is coming together,” she expressed. “Even if we’re not at the game, it still brings all of us together as a country.”

While Friday night was enjoyable for many, some fans wish FIFA and the U.S. would work to make the World Cup more accessible and affordable. “Without the fans, it isn’t really a World Cup,” said Kunal Mehrotra from Koreatown. Monica Unzueta from Maywood echoed this, noting that events should be free.

Though attending a World Cup game live may be unrealistic for most, events like the Coliseum’s watch party offer an exciting alternative. Tyler David from Tampa remarked, “Beyond belief,” praising the atmosphere and celebrating the U.S.’s robust performance against Paraguay.

Such events bring fans together, uniting various cultures and communities in celebration of soccer.
