New York Knicks star Josh Hart anticipated issues for the San Antonio Spurs before even stepping onto the court for Game 1 of the NBA Finals. At 31, Hart pointed to a mistake the Spurs made during their celebration after winning Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Victor Wembanyama’s tears during the post-game celebrations highlighted the pressure on the Spurs.
Josh Hart shared his insights during a recent episode of “The Roommates Show” with his teammate Jalen Brunson, recorded at Madison Square Garden. “Everyone was expecting OKC to repeat, ” Hart remarked. “When the Spurs beat OKC, the young team seemed to reach their peak. I told (Brunson), ‘Do you see their reaction? They think they’ve already won.’”
The contrast between the Spurs and the Knicks was apparent. After the Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers to make their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999, their celebration was muted. “Winning the Eastern Conference was a great achievement, ” Hart explained, “but we viewed it as just a step. The ultimate goal was still ahead.”
The Knicks’ mindset and measured reactions were evident throughout the NBA Finals. The youthful Spurs lost double-digit leads in all four games they lost to the Knicks. The Knicks’ calm demeanor and perseverance were evident, as three of the five biggest comebacks in NBA Finals history occurred during this series against the Spurs.
The Knicks only celebrated after defeating the Spurs in Game 5. Their players repeatedly stated their mentality was treating each game as “0-0.” Josh Hart played a pivotal role in the NBA Finals, demonstrating strong defensive skills and serving as a key rebounder and facilitator on offense. Throughout the 19 playoff games, Hart averaged 10.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.
