Maya Rudolph has a soft spot for humor that borders on absurdity. Her Broadway debut in “Oh, Mary!” exemplifies this taste. She stars as a hilariously fictionalized Mary Todd Lincoln in a play she fondly describes as “so dumb, it’s brilliant.” In a video interview, Rudolph expressed her affection for comedy that feels incredibly silly, offering a sense of cozy familiarity.
The play, “Oh, Mary!”, presents Mrs. Lincoln as a narcissistic, hard-drinking character with dreams of becoming a cabaret singer. Her husband, Abraham, is portrayed as overly strict, creating an amusing dynamic. Rudolph, with her background in “Saturday Night Live”, improv, and sketch comedy, immerses herself in the farcical humor. Her physical comedy and elastic facial expressions often steal the show, generating laughter beyond the script’s punchlines.
“She is, at her core, a stage beast,” said director Sam Pinkleton. He praised her ability to live in the moment, engage with the audience, and respond instinctively. This natural comedic presence seems ingrained in her performance.
Rudolph took on the role of Mary in late April, joining a unique lineage of performers that includes Cole Escola, Betty Gilpin, Tituss Burgess, Jinkx Monsoon, Hannah Solow, Jane Krakowski, and John Cameron Mitchell. Despite having only 10 days for rehearsal, Rudolph extended her engagement until July 5, showing her commitment to the project.
