New Bedford Whaling Museum’s ‘Worst Aquarium’ Design Goes Viral

9 hours ago 0

New Bedford, known for its whaling history, has gained attention for another reason recently: the ‘worst aquarium’ merchandise. In 2020, a Google user described the New Bedford Whaling Museum in this way, and the museum embraced the humor. They started selling shirts and hoodies with the review on the back and a whale skeleton on the front. This unique approach caught the nation’s eye.

Viral Success

On Wednesday night, a CBS Evening News segment spotlighted the merchandise, boosting its popularity. Following the coverage, the museum received 738 online orders by Thursday afternoon, most of which were for the ‘worst aquarium’ items. The museum’s president, Amanda McMullen, stated that staff had often joked about the review, which provided amusement. In 2020, the museum didn’t have an aquarium, but it showcased several whale skeletons.

Merchandise Design

Emily Roznoy, who designed the merchandise, noted inspiration from a barbecue restaurant with a similar design. The museum’s product line includes T-shirts, sweaters, and tote bags featuring both the review and a drawing of a sperm whale skeleton. Roznoy emphasized that the humor and spirit of the area played a role in the design’s appeal.

The museum initially restocked 160 adult T-shirts, already more than normal. Following the CBS segment, they ordered 750 more adult T-shirts, 400 youth size T-shirts, and other items. Each adult shirt sells for $32.50, while other prices vary.

Community Response

The design resonated with both local and broader audiences. Guests were eager to purchase and inquire about future stock at the museum’s store. Cyn Spence, a local customer, purchased items as gifts, labeling the design as ‘genius.’ McMullen sees the design as boosting the museum’s fun image, enhanced by serious scholarship.

Aquarium Exhibit

The timing of the viral design coincides with the museum’s new exhibit, a 250-gallon saltwater tank. Although modest, the aquarium highlights local marine life, integrating education with humor. The partnership with UMass Dartmouth underscores the importance of regional ecology discussions.

Roznoy and Conway, key figures behind the merchandise, conveyed that the design reflects a sense of authenticity and the community’s value. Roznoy’s personal connection to the area has helped shape the marketing success. Both see the design as an opportunity to foster community interaction and engagement, rather than exclusivity.
