In a heartbreaking event, the body of a 5-year-old girl was found after being swept into the ocean at Laguna Beach, California. The incident occurred on Tuesday during hazardous water conditions. The young girl was in the water with her mother and sibling when they were pulled into the sea.
A lifeguard rescue boat was active around the vicinity of the incident on June 10, 2026, near the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach. The discovery was made through an early-morning aerial survey conducted on Thursday by police, who spotted the body 250 to 300 yards offshore of Christmas Cove, about a quarter mile north of Treasure Island Beach. This was near the location where the wave initially struck the child, pulling her into the turbulent surf on Tuesday evening.
The Laguna Beach Marine Safety Department worked with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol to recover the child’s body. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department coroner confirmed the identification, and the family of the victim has been informed of the tragic outcome.
The mother and the girl’s sibling were rescued by bystanders who acted quickly to assist. Unfortunately, despite an intensive search effort for the second child, the U.S. Coast Guard had to suspend their search on Thursday. They had combed more than 90 square miles over a search period exceeding 30 hours.
On the day of the incident, the National Weather Service had warned of elevated surf conditions across Southern California. Waves were reported to reach up to nine feet in Laguna Beach, leading to beach hazard notices. The high swells and rip currents posed significant threats, as highlighted in the warnings issued earlier.
