Tropical Storm Arthur has formed from a previously disorganized cluster of storms affecting the Gulf Coast. The storm represents the first tropical cyclone this season in the Atlantic basin. Flash flooding poses the main threat from Arthur, though it is a weak system. The National Hurricane Center in Miami stated that Arthur would be short-lived, with maximum sustained winds of approximately 40 mph (65 kph).
The storm hovered over coastal Texas as a World Cup match took place in Houston between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite the weather, the match proceeded without schedule changes, as the stadium featured a cover.
Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center, mentioned that flash flood warnings were already in place for the Houston metropolitan area. These warnings are likely to expand across the region, even after the storm’s center moves on. Brennan emphasized that Arthur presents a prolonged heavy rainfall event posing risks of dangerous or life-threatening flash flooding.
Sadly, authorities reported a teenager drowned after entering a flooded retention pond outside Houston. This incident highlights the risks associated with floodwaters, particularly after heavy rains. Flooding could persist through Friday across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle. Rainfall totals from Arthur might reach 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 centimeters), with some areas experiencing up to 20 inches (50 centimeters).
Coastal areas may face flooding from storm surges and tides. Swells from Arthur could lead to dangerous surf and rip current conditions along the northwestern Gulf Coast for several days. The potential for tornadoes also exists through Thursday.
On Wednesday morning, the center of Tropical Storm Arthur was about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east-northeast of Port O’Connor, Texas. The storm moved northeast at roughly 9 mph (15 kph), with expectations for an increase in forward speed.
