Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra is leading in the California gubernatorial primary, with his support growing among key voter groups. According to a recent Emerson College Polling survey, Becerra holds 28% support. He is followed by fellow Democrat Tom Steyer at 22% and Republican Steve Hilton at 21%.
Republican candidate Chad Bianco, the Riverside County Sheriff, has 12%. Democrats Katie Porter and Matt Mahan each have 5%.
Becerra’s backing is strong among key constituencies. He has 44% of Democrats, 36% of Hispanics, and 36% of women. Hilton leads among Republicans with 59% support, while Bianco is at 29%. Steyer is popular among younger voters under 30, earning 36%, and has 25% support from white voters.
The primary could lead to the top two candidates advancing to November’s general election, regardless of party affiliation. Emerson College Polling Executive Director Spencer Kimball noted that Hilton may gain if Bianco loses support. Steyer’s chances rely on engaging young voters while preventing Becerra from gaining more ground.
The survey shows strong voter commitment, with 75% of respondents firm in their choice. However, 25% remain open to changing their vote. Becerra maintained 28% support when voters were asked about potential support. Hilton and Steyer each trailed slightly at 23%.
The poll included 1,000 likely voters, conducted on May 27 and 28. Becerra’s support increased by 9 percentage points from a previous poll conducted May 9-10. Meanwhile, Steyer and Hilton improved by 5 and 4 points, respectively.
