Renovations and Repairs Underway in Washington, DC

1 hour ago 0

A passenger on a commercial flight descending into Washington, DC, captured an aerial photo that reveals several ongoing renovations in the city. The photo, taken on June 16, highlights the algae-covered Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, damage to the White House South Lawn following the UFC Freedom 250 fight, and a mysterious covering on the National Mall displaying the number “8647.” The latter prompted an investigation by the U.S. Park Police.

The Department of the Interior recently completed work on the Reflecting Pool. However, the pool remains algae-green, which contrasts with the intended “American Flag Blue” color selected by President Donald Trump for the country’s 250th anniversary celebration.

Efforts to address the algae situation are ongoing. Workers were seen on June 17 pouring hydrogen peroxide into the Reflecting Pool to combat the algae. Yet, by Wednesday, sections of the pool continued to exhibit a green hue.

On the White House South Lawn, restoration efforts follow the damage incurred from the UFC fight on June 14. The White House announced on June 16 that ScottsMiracle-Gro, along with the National Park Service, will work together to restore the lawn. ScottsMiracle-Gro has pledged $1 million toward the restoration project.

USA TODAY has reached out to the National Park Service seeking further information regarding repairs to the National Mall, which experienced discoloration and a politically charged message.
