Mira Nair is a filmmaker accustomed to attention. She has focused her lens on the intimate social and cultural experiences of Indians. However, during the shooting of her latest film about the Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil, she noticed a shift in how people recognize her.
More individuals approach Nair, recognizing her as the mother of Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City. On her film set, young artists expressed that Mamdani’s political views resonated with them. Her husband, Mahmood Mamdani, has also received attention, as seen in a coffee shop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where a beverage was offered to him for free after being identified as the mayor’s father.
“I feel like we have given him to the world,” Nair remarked in an interview conducted in Amritsar, India. Sitting across a coffee table in her temporary residence, adorned with personal touches like small rugs and a Jaipuri block-printed quilt, she spoke fondly of her son, referring to him as “Zohru,” “Z,” or simply “our boy.” Despite her handler’s concerns that the discussion would focus on Mamdani, the conversation extended beyond the allotted time to address her upcoming film, “Amri,” set for release in 2027.
During a meal of shrimp curry and rice, the conversation shifted to her reflections on her son’s role as mayor of a vibrant city. Nair traveled from Amritsar to New York to attend the inauguration, which she filmed, and also toured Gracie Mansion, Mamdani’s official residence.
