New York’s Congressional Battles: Progressive vs. Establishment Democrats

1 hour ago 0

New York City’s congressional races have heated up as candidates make their last appeals to voters ahead of a significant primary election. This election showcases a contest between the progressive left and establishment Democrats.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is at the forefront, rallying support for three House candidates. He aims to channel the excitement from his prior election win into reshaping the city’s congressional lineup. His efforts include campaign videos and a rally with U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The party of the past will not be what leads us into the future. We need a Democratic Party with backbone, noted Mamdani.

Jack Schlossberg’s Congressional Bid

In another closely observed race, Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, seeks congressional office in Manhattan. Notwithstanding the strength of his family connections and social media following, he faces fierce competition. His opponents include:

  • Alex Bores: A state Assembly member who challenges Silicon Valley over AI regulation.
  • Micah Lasher: A seasoned Assembly member backed by New York Democratic leaders.
  • George Conway: An attorney and former Trump critic.

As the campaign wraps up, Schlossberg has garnered support from host David Letterman and his mother, Caroline Kennedy.

Mamdani’s Endorsements

Mamdani focuses on three congressional races, supporting democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier against incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the first Dominican American in Congress, representing northern Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. Espaillat has raised questions about Avila Chevalier’s past social media posts. She has expressed regret and apologized for certain comments.

Meanwhile, former city Comptroller Brad Lander receives Mamdani’s endorsement in his campaign against Rep. Dan Goldman. Lander highlights his connection with Mamdani, whereas Goldman emphasizes his contributions in Congress.

Mamdani also backs Claire Valdez, a former Assembly colleague, against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. Both candidates are progressives, yet Valdez positions herself as a potential ally to Mamdani in Washington.
