President Donald Trump took decisive actions against the Tren de Aragua gang, addressing the threat it poses across the Americas and Europe.
Guerrero Flores Eliminated
On Friday, President Trump confirmed a U.S. strike had killed Hector Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, deemed the leader of the Tren de Aragua gang by the United States.
The gang is designated as a terrorist organization and has been charged with various crimes, including lending support to terrorists. These charges were filed by a New York federal court.
Defense Secretary’s Confirmation
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth informed that the attack occurred earlier in the week at a compound in Venezuela, targeting the gang’s operations.
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton highlighted the gang’s widespread criminal activities, including violence, extortion, and drug trafficking. Trump has now nominated Clayton as director of national intelligence.
U.S. Stance on Narco-Terrorism
The U.S. State Department had been offering substantial rewards for information on Guerrero Flores. Trump assured the public of continued aggression against such criminal entities through a social media post. He expressed his commitment to eliminating narco-terrorist threats.
Trump shared a video of a green-roofed building exploding, emphasizing cooperation between the U.S. and Venezuela to combat narco-terrorists.
Venezuela’s Unresponsiveness
There was no immediate comment from Venezuela’s ministry regarding the strike. Trump’s administration has targeted gang-affiliated drug smuggling activities relentlessly.
Over 200 individuals have been eliminated in U.S. military strikes against narcoterrorists since the campaign began in September, with a focus on Tren de Aragua.
Gang’s Origins and Expansion
Tren de Aragua originated within a notorious prison in Venezuela’s Aragua state over a decade ago.
Guerrero Flores returned to this prison in 2013, taking control amidst Venezuela’s economic downturn.
He and others transformed the prison, creating an oppressive structure that included various amenities for inmates.
Countries like Peru and Colombia accuse Tren de Aragua of causing violence in regions populated by Venezuelan migrants.
Criminal Activities
While they lack involvement in cocaine trafficking, Venezuelan gang leaders, including Tren de Aragua, engage in various illicit activities such as gold mining.
Trump’s Re-election Agenda
Trump campaigned promising action against crime and immigration, which remain his strongest issues in public opinion. Despite sagging ratings on economic management, immigration policy holds strong favor.
