Inglewood, Calif. – Folarin Balogun ignited excitement by scoring his second goal into Paraguay’s net, leading the U.S. team in their spectacular World Cup opener. After years of anticipation, the grand soccer tournament returned to the United States, making a significant impact.
Historic Victory
Balogun netted two goals in a robust first half performance. The U.S. began its home World Cup campaign with a resounding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, marking their largest winning margin in tournament history. Christian Pulisic’s impressive playmaking contributed significantly in the first half, thrilling fans in Southern California with an aggressive approach that resulted in a 3-0 lead, the team’s largest at any World Cup.
Pulisic reflected on the match by stating, “A half like that, to excite our fans, felt amazing.” Gio Reyna added another goal during second-half injury time, marking the first time in history the U.S. team had scored four goals in a World Cup match.
Transformational Changes
The team’s transformation was evident, showcasing a performance unlike their typical past appearances on the global stage. Historically, they have achieved just one knockout victory in World Cup history and struggled to score in major tournaments. At the Qatar World Cup in 2022, they scored only three goals across four matches.
In this pressure-filled home tournament opener, the U.S. team appeared revitalized under coach Mauricio Pochettino’s innovative system. Before a lively Los Angeles crowd of 70,492, the team was led by standout players Balogun, Pulisic, and Weston McKennie. Pochettino, who took control in late 2024, remarked on the game, “It was amazing for our fans to see.”
Notably, Pulisic was substituted at halftime by Sebastian Berhalter for preventive reasons. Pochettino explained an earlier training incident had left Pulisic with tightness in his calf. However, Pulisic remained optimistic about the minor injury.
“Staying positive,” Pulisic said, “I don’t think it’s anything.”
Paraguay’s Mauricio scored in the second half, but the team lagged following their early setback.
Exemplary Performance
After an early own-goal initiated by Pulisic, Balogun scored in the 31st minute and again in added first-half time. The forward, who opted to represent the U.S. rather than pursuing a spot in England’s team, showcased his skills, becoming the first to achieve a multi-goal feat for the U.S. since 1930.
“Why not us?” Balogun recalled Pochettino saying, emphasizing belief in themselves.
Pulisic helped orchestrate the first two goals with remarkable runs along the left wing. In the seventh minute, he skillfully maneuvered past two defenders, passing to McKennie. The ball deflected off Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla’s foot, sparking celebration among the crowd.
The U.S. amplified their attack, highlighted by another chance from Balogun, initially disallowed for offside. Yet, Pulisic facilitated another goal with a pass to Balogun, who executed brilliantly.
Later, Malik Tillman’s precise pass in injury time found Balogun, who navigated Paraguay’s defense for a spectacular finish. Although the second half saw reduced cohesion without Pulisic, Reyna added a final, skilful goal, sweetened by his initially limited presence in Qatar amid previous family conflicts.
The match attracted numerous American celebrities and icons, including Tom Cruise, Halle Berry, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, enriching the event’s cultural significance.
