Representative Ro Khanna expressed his belief in the account of a woman who accused Graham Platner of threatening behavior. He urged Platner’s campaign not to criticize her.
This response came as congressional Democrats voiced concerns over Platner, the presumptive Democratic Senate nominee in Maine. Despite several women describing their relationships with him as volatile and ‘toxic’, some Democrats continue to support his candidacy.
Reactions appeared on news shows and social media, showing a party struggling with Platner’s campaign in a key Senate race just before Tuesday’s primary election. Even Khanna, a vocal supporter, acknowledged the woman’s account and advised against any criticism.
A recent New York Times report disclosed that three women who had dated Platner described him as volatile and disrespectful toward women. On May 30, additional revelations emerged about Platner sending inappropriate messages to women outside his marriage as recently as the previous year.
Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, a centrist Democrat, described the allegations as ‘beyond disturbing’. Speaking on Fox News, he emphasized that it was up to Maine voters to decide if these accusations should disqualify Platner.
“If these allegations are true, they’re very troubling,” Warner stated during his Fox News appearance. “But I don’t know if they are true or not. I think, frankly, the people in Maine ought to decide that.”
Platner’s campaign firmly denies any claims of physical intimidation or altercations. A Marine Corps veteran with deployment experience in Iraq, Platner detailed struggles with PTSD. He admitted to self-medicating with alcohol and acknowledged being an imperfect partner during what he termed a ‘very dark period’ prior to his ‘transformation’.
He also dismissed the reports of sending inappropriate messages as distractions from more critical voter concerns.
