Alkaline water has gained attention as an alternative to regular drinking water. Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Wahlberg, and Jennifer Aniston have promoted it in brand campaigns. However, experts indicate that scientific evidence is not definitive.

Bottled alkaline water might contain additional minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which can result in an alkaline pH. A pH of 7 is neutral, while levels above 7 are alkaline and below 7 are acidic. Mayo Clinic explains that plain tap water typically has a lower pH compared to alkaline water.

Potential Health Claims and Scientific Views

Some suggest that alkaline water can neutralize bodily acidity and potentially prevent health issues like cancer and stroke. Alkaline water might also slow bone loss, likely due to added calcium.

Research hints that a combination of alkaline water and a plant-based Mediterranean diet might ease acid reflux. Several studies indicate that alkaline water could improve GERD symptoms. Mayo Clinic emphasizes the need for extensive research to substantiate these claims and evaluate long-term benefits.

Expert Opinions

Harvard Medical School’s Howard E. LeWine, MD, notes that alkaline water benefits are temporary. “Because the stomach fluid is acidic, once regular or alkaline water enters the stomach, there’s minimal effect on stomach fluid pH,” he wrote.

LeWine observes that while alkaline water might relieve heartburn, more effective treatments like antacids exist. He warns of potential dangers for those using PPIs or stomach acid blockers, as high pH levels can raise blood potassium dangerously.

Echoing this concern, Mayo Clinic mentions that water with a pH over 9.8 may cause hyperkalemia, a condition marked by high blood potassium.

Nutritional Insights and Recommendations

Certified holistic nutritionist Robin DeCicco states there’s “no strong evidence” of alkaline water offering “meaningful long-term health benefits.” She emphasizes foundational dietary habits—such as eating real foods, avoiding excessive sugar, caffeine, processed, and fried foods—as crucial for reducing body acidity.

DeCicco advises consuming vegetables, fruits, omega-3 fats, lean proteins, and fiber to maintain low acidity levels. For those facing acid reflux, seeing a doctor and adopting positive habits—like regular meals, not lying down post-eating, and avoiding acidic foods—are recommended strategies.
